It’s hard not to feel the weight of the world these days. Many people are struggling with their mental health, and the increased stress in today’s world can have a negative impact on our ability to cope in an effective and healthy way. I believe that therapy can help you to move forward from your current obstacles and improve your mental health, thereby improving your day-to-day functioning and mood, current relationships, and future goals. I also believe that the therapeutic relationship and a good rapport is very important; hence, finding the right psychologist for you is encouraged.
I obtained my Doctorate in Clinical Forensic Psychology and have been working in both clinical and forensic settings for over 14 years. I currently provide assessment and therapy services in provincial correctional centres and I conduct psychodiagnostic, functional impairment, vocational psychological, cognitive, learning disorder, intellectual disability, and ADHD assessments for individuals injured at work and/or who have barriers to employment. I am also a clinical supervisor for masters and doctoral psychology students who are completing practicum placements with a focus on psychological assessment. Additionally, I worked in federal corrections for several years, completing suicide risk assessments, as well as violence and sexual offending risk assessments for the Parole Board of Canada. I have been qualified as an expert witness in the areas of clinical forensic psychology, violence risk assessment, and treatment of offenders by the Vancouver Provincial Court. I also have experience working with adults and adolescents with a wide range of mental health concerns, including depression, anxiety, anger, emotion dysregulation, substance use, and relationship difficulties as well as individuals who are experiencing life, family, and/or work-related stress, and those who are on leave from work due to mental health concerns. Specifically, I have experience assessing and providing psychotherapy to first responders (e.g., police, firefighters, paramedics, correctional officers, and nurses) who have been diagnosed with psychological disorders due the significant difficulty of their jobs and the accumulation of traumatic experiences they often encounter at work.
I primarily utilize a Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Strengths-Based approach to treatment. I also have experience using Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), and mindfulness-based techniques. I take a collaborative approach to therapy, with clients setting the initial treatment goals at the beginning and working together with the client to monitor their progress and accomplish their goals.
Dr. Hodgson's practice is currently focused on conducting psychological assessments. She maintains a limited caseload of therapy clients, primarily seeing first responders, correctional workers, and forensic clients via telehealth.
